Chloramine Conversion in North San José & Alviso

In February 2004, the water that San José Municipal Water System (SJMWS) purchases from San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) for its customers in North San José and Alviso will undergo a slight change as SFPUC switches the water disinfectant from chlorine to chloramine.

Chloramine is a combination of chlorine and ammonia that is considered a better disinfectant. Many Bay area communities including our customers in Evergreen, whose water supplies comes from Santa Clara Valley Water District, are successfully using chloramine disinfectant. With the conversion to chloramine, our customers in North San José and Alviso will continue to receive the highest quality water that will meet current and anticipated regulatory water quality regulations.

Chloraminated water is safe for people and animals to drink, cook with, bath in, and for all other general uses. However, as with chlorine, sensitive users such as kidney dialysis patients, fish, amphibian and reptiles owners and industrial /biotechnology businesses must take precautions prior to using the water. Chloramine, a combination of chlorine and ammonia, must be neutralized or removed for these purposes. Sensitive users can find out more information from the following resources:

Fish, amphibian, and reptile owners, please visit the following websites:

Dialysis Patients, please contact your dialysis provider or the Trans Pacific Renal Network:

Industrial users and biotechnology firms, please contact your equipment supplier or current water treatment professionals.

For additional information about the benefits and impacts from this switchover, please contact a water quality engineer at (408) 277-3671, visit the SFPUC website or call the Chloramine Information Line at (415) 351-4200.
