Hydrant Meters

Hydrant meter on a construction siteNo person may take water from a public fire hydrant connected to the public water system without first obtaining a permit and paying all fees and charges. By City ordinance, contractors must file and have approved an exception to the Water Waste Prevention and Water Shortage Measures requirements contained in Section 15.10 of the San Jose Municipal Code prior to applying for a hydrant meter. An application for an exception to the ordinance must be obtained from, and approved by the City’s Public Works Department located at City Hall. A $35 fee is required to process the application.

For construction, after receiving an exception to the Water Waste Prevention and Water Shortage Measures requirements, contractors may obtain temporary construction meters through the San José Municipal Water System. To obtain a hydrant meter, the applicant must apply for a Temporary Service in person at our office located at 3025 Tuers Road in San José. To complete the process and obtain a meter, applicant must provide a copy of the approved exception form, and provide an $800 security deposit.
